Orting in Pictures
This photograph is the right half of a panorama taken from the proposed site of the new high school. (The left half of the panorama can be seen on page four.) Mount Rainier is visible in the distance to the southeast. The slope on the right is the south wall of the Carbon-Puyallup River valley. Viewed together, these two pictures give a feel for the confined valley setting of the city. Looking at this panorama is not unlike looking into the muzzle of a cannon, since huge mudflows have shot down this valley many times in the past. The grasses waving in the foreground are growing in the fertile soil of the most recent major mudflow, the Electron Mudflow, that inundated this valley just 530 years ago.
