Rogue's Gallery of Natural Disasters:
Hurricane The Atlantic hurricane season has been more active and destructive in recent years, with many more storms than normal making landfall in the U.S. This GOES image of hurricane Fran was taken on September 5, 1996, only hours before landfall on the North Carolina coast. Sustained winds of 115 mph with gusts of up to 125 mph were recorded. Fran caused 37 deaths and approximately $5 billion in property damage. GOES Image: Courtesy of GSFC/NASA
